Haven't heard much about the President's request for an examination of the possibility for a central "firearm fingerprint" registry. Focus has been on catching the D.C. sniper, which, thankfully, appears to have happened. Anyway, here in Canada we went through the exercise and cost of a national firearm registration. It was not especially well accepted nor well executed. The best argument against, in my opinion was that the registry would not prevent the use of firearms in criminal acts nor would it expedite the investigation BECAUSE only the most petty and incompetent of criminals would use anything but a contraband, illegally obtained firearm in commission of a capital crime. Wonder if Congress will spend a lot of time and energy on the examination.
